What is the Trinity?

And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: and lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Matthew 3:16-17

The trinity is the Godhead – three, separate beings that make up one God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. This passage in Matthew shows us each of these figures separately, but in agreement with one another. When Jesus (the Son) is baptized, God (the Father) sends His spirit (the Holy Ghost) down from Heaven in the form of a dove to show Their union.

Jesus did not suddenly come into being when He was born of Mary, but has always been present with the Father and the Holy Ghost from the beginning. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.” (John 1:1-2)

God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Ghost are not three gods to be worshipped – nor do They act in opposition to one another. They are always one in Their actions. Think of the Godhead like an egg. An egg is one object, but it is made up of three, separate parts: the shell, the yoke and the white. All three together make the egg, the same as the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost make God. All three reside in Heaven (1 John 5:7).
